Instructional objective(s):
Students will be able to understand the differences between forces of nature and forces of man.
ACTION
Before-class preparation:
Create video to show to class introducing the problem
Prepare two lists for students to choose events from that have caused devastation to mankind. One list would cover events caused by nature and one would list events caused by man.
Prepare packet with student questions, topics, and proposal statement to give to students.

Show video: 10 minutes
Darlington dressed in biohazard suit and Morrison dressed as a force of nature will act out dramatic scene at the conclusion of video to engage students and get them fired up about project.
Once students have viewed video and dramatization, students will discuss different forces of nature and forces of man that have devastated mankind.
Students will use graphic organizer to describe the differences between forces of nature and forces of man.
Once discussion is over and students understand the differences between the two, they will be asked to choose which causes greater devastation to mankind.

Notes: Student groupings, environmental modifications needed, etc.
Students will not be grouped for this portion of the unit. They must decide on their own which causes greater devastation to mankind and write a proposal that backs up their statement with facts based on their decision.

Ongoing assessment(s): Students must submit a proposal that must be approved by both of their teachers. Once proposal is approved, student may then pick out three events to research on their chosen side. Provided in the packet they received are questions in which the students must answer on the events chosen. Accommodations and extensions: Students who are having difficulty or trouble finding information will need to communicate such with a teacher as soon as possible so that they can find a replacement.
Backup plan: If the students are unable to find information on the events that they have chosen, the teachers will provide them with events and websites that they know have information.
